What is a neck strap and why do I need one?

A neck strap is a simple loop that sits around your horse's neck, just in front of the wither. It gives you something to grab if you lose balance - over a fence, on a spooky hack, or during a big transition. It's not a sign of weakness; it's a sign of good horsemanship. Many professional riders and trainers use one as standard. It protects your horse's mouth by giving you an alternative to grabbing the reins, and it builds your confidence so you can ride more freely.

What neck strap sizes are available?

We offer two fully adjustable sizes:

  • Pony/Cob - Ideal for smaller frames and refined ponies. Adjustable from approximately 87cm to 120cm.
  • Cob/Full - Designed for larger horses and those with a bit more "front." Adjustable from approximately 120cm to 153cm.

If you're unsure, measure loosely around your horse's neck where you'd want the strap to sit (just in front of the wither) and check it falls within the range. If you're between sizes, go for the larger option - you can always adjust it down.

What hardware options are available for my neck strap?

Every neck strap comes with your choice of 4 plated hardware finishes as standard. For those who want a premium, long-lasting finish, you can upgrade to Stainless Steel or Solid Brass for an additional £5. Stainless steel won't rust or tarnish and is ideal if your horse lives out or if you're regularly washing tack. Solid brass offers a classic, warm-toned look that develops a beautiful patina over time.

Why do you use BioThane instead of leather for your equestrian products?

Leather looks lovely on day one. Then it meets rain, sweat, and mud - and it needs cleaning, conditioning, and careful storage to stay supple. BioThane doesn't. It's completely waterproof, won't absorb odours, and stays flexible in any weather. You can hose it down, wipe it clean, or throw it in the washing machine at 30°C. It won't crack, dry out, or go mouldy - even if you leave it in a damp tack room all winter. Same strength, none of the maintenance.

Can I use this neck strap for bitless or bridleless riding?

Absolutely. A neck strap is one of the most useful tools for riders exploring bridleless work. It gives you a point of contact for steering cues and a safety grab if needed. Because BioThane is slightly grippy and doesn't slide the way leather can, it stays put where you position it - which matters when you're relying on subtle neck rein pressure.

How do I clean my new neck strap?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth after use, or for a deeper clean, a dash of washing up liquid can help. That's it. No saddle soap, no leather conditioner, no drying time. It's ready to use again straight away.

Will the colours on the BioThane fade?

BioThane is UV-resistant and designed to hold its colour. Unlike dyed leather that can fade, scuff, or transfer colour when wet, BioThane maintains its finish through rain, sun, and regular cleaning. The colour goes all the way through the material, not just on the surface.
