What is a BioThane Popper?
Your silent extension in the saddle-free conversation.
A popper is the weighted tab at the tail end of your groundwork rope. It's not decoration - it's a working tool.
It acts as an extension of your arm, giving you extra reach to guide your horse's shoulders or hindquarters without needing a separate whip or stick. Swing or twirl the rope and the popper creates rhythmic movement and just enough presence to encourage a lazy or resistant horse forward. Its weight also keeps the rope balanced and hanging straight, so you can feel exactly where the tail is without looking down.
Traditional poppers are made from leather. They work well when new, but they absorb water, stiffen in cold weather, and crack over time - especially if you're training in all conditions.
Our BioThane popper gives you the same weight, feel, and function - but it's completely waterproof, stink-proof, and wipe-clean. It won't soak up mud or sweat, won't stiffen in winter, and won't deteriorate with use. And with 21 colours to choose from, it's the finishing touch that makes your rope yours.
Why did we choose 15ft for our groundwork ropes?
The sweet spot for groundwork.
15ft (4.5m) is the length most widely used in natural horsemanship for close groundwork, liberty exercises, and leading work. It gives you enough distance to send your horse out on a circle, work through transitions, and practise lateral movements - without excess rope dragging on the ground or getting tangled around your feet.
It's long enough for meaningful groundwork and short enough to keep your communication tight and responsive.
If you're looking for a longer line for lunging or long-lining, keep an eye on our rope collection - we're expanding our range with additional lengths soon.
How Do I Care for My Groundwork Rope?
Built for real life. Easy to keep clean.
Your PPM rope is waterproof and machine washable at 30°C - just pop it in a wash bag or pillowcase to protect the fibres during the cycle. Air dry afterwards.
The BioThane popper needs even less - a quick wipe with warm soapy water and it's done. Mud, sweat, slobber - nothing absorbs into BioThane, so nothing builds up over time.
Avoid harsh solvents, bleach, or tumble drying. With basic care, your rope and popper will stay supple, clean, and ready for years of use.
IMPORTANT: Safety Notice
Never tie your horse directly with this rope.
This groundwork rope is designed for in-hand work only - groundwork, liberty, leading, and training. It is not a tie-up rope.
If you need to tie your horse using this rope, always use a loop of baling twine or a purpose-made breakaway tie between the rope and the tying point. This gives you a breakaway point in case your horse pulls back, reducing the risk of injury to your horse or damage to the rope.
Never tie directly to a fixed object without a breakaway safety measure.
