Staycation season is in full swing, and for a lot of us that means a car boot full of towels, a dog beside himself with excitement, and a drive to the coast. Before you go, here's the checklist worth running through — because a great beach day and a miserable one often come down to a few small things.
Check Before You Go
Not every UK beach welcomes dogs year-round — plenty bring in seasonal restrictions between roughly May and September, sometimes on certain sections only. A two-minute check of the specific beach's rules saves an awkward U-turn when you arrive. Tide times matter too: a beach that's generous at low tide can disappear almost entirely at high tide, sand and all.
Water Sense
Seawater and excitable dogs are a classic combination for a nasty case of “saltwater tummy” — dogs drink far more of it than you'd think when they're overheated and having the time of their life. Bring fresh water and a bowl, and offer it regularly so seawater is never the only option going. If there's a river mouth or freshwater nearby, be aware blue-green algae is a real summer risk in still water.
When in doubt, keep him out.
Sun And Paws
Thin-coated, pale-nosed and light-skinned dogs can genuinely burn — noses and ear tips especially. A pet-safe sunscreen on those spots is worth five minutes. Sand and pebbles heat up fast too; if it's too hot for the back of your hand for five seconds, it's too hot for paws, and an early morning or early evening trip solves that outright.
Getting There In One Piece
Car parks at popular beaches in July are chaos — other dogs, ice cream, children, the works. This is exactly the moment for excellent control at the point of arrival, before the lead comes off for the actual beach bit. A slip lead gives you quick, secure control getting from car to sand without fiddling with a collar in a car park scrum.
After The Beach
This is where a lot of gear quietly gives up. Leather leads and collars soak up seawater and sand and hold onto both — the smell that lingers in the car for the whole drive home is not your imagination. It's exactly the problem BioThane was built to solve: rinse the sand and salt straight off, no soaking-in, no lingering pong. Our Wilmington and Firle leads (and their matching collars) are handmade to shrug off exactly this kind of day, so the only thing that needs a proper wash when you get home is the dog.
